Prologue

1.
how to live in the galore
as we pack
purses

feed
ourselves each day

stopgap
the ratholes—
protect the patio garden

how to stretch a bungee,
stretch and stretch it,
fling it free
and damaging, timing
everything right

we're all bingeing.
united nations be damned;
we need a new sofa

how to pledge more rising
free and damaging
in this field of human
adjustments

2.
though we
thrive while
trodden, vowing
for vigor, no scorn
for longshots—

we are protractedly
worn

and on and on
and now like ourselves
occasionally, wrung thin
as meted urbane
promise, but
we can be exceptional
exceptional
as water is

we are the whereas, nimbly
the nines, cognitive
dissidents
and everyone is seditious
